Take The Moments

November 9, 2023

One of my side hustles is property management. I actually love this role I play! I get to meet people from around the world and help create memories. The lodge I manage is THE nicest private lodge at Copper Mountain (Colorado). The place sleeps 20 people (in beds), which means there is a lot of coordination between management (me) and the guests’ arrival. I won’t tell you about all the fireplaces and steam showers or the ski in/out access. Just take my word for it, this place is AWESOME!

When the holiday season hits there are expectations that our winter wonderland will be decorated for Christmas! Duh.You can’t come to the mountains in December without Christmas decor!

Before the deep snow hits, I try to get decorations in place which means I decorate early. But not as early as Hobby Lobby… seriously… August is TOO early!

My dad and I take on the task of outdoor lights. We talk about airplanes (my dad’s favorite topic) and biking (mine) as we untangle lights. As we start to wrap the trees so begins the contest to see who is better with our lighting extension poles. Which one of us can maneuver the homemade lighting hooks better? Our homemade light hook consists of two pencils and some tape! Our coordination with this contraption is comical, but we get the job done.

This year our decorating tasks took about eight hours. It was a good day. I gave my dad a huge hug, said thank you, and “I love you padre!”

When I got home that evening I was greeted by my handsomely amazing and ever-so brilliant husband. He asked about my day. “We had a really good time,” I said. It didn’t feel like work at all. I actually wasn’t that tired from running flights of stairs and being up and down ladders at 9,500 feet.

“That is great,” my husband responded with a smile. “What I wouldn’t give to have just one moment back with my dad.”

My heart broke for my husband, but he smiled at the memory of his dad. I never got to meet my father-in-law. He passed away before I met my husband. I will meet him someday.

The moral of this message… here it is…

Take the moments with those you love. Create those moments! Cherish those moments.Say “I love you.” Say “I’m sorry.” Laugh. Cry. And don’t get bent out of shape about politics!

Life is not a dress rehearsal. This is the real show. Roll the footage on the movie you want to make. YOU are the director. Choose your cast carefully and create the BEST scenes with those that matter the most.
